Frequently asked questions about the driving test

Everything you want to know about exam centres, practice routes and the practical test, organised by category.

Exam centres

How do I choose the right exam centre?

Choose the exam centre where your practical test is actually scheduled. On the Exam centres page you'll find the corresponding practice routes and manoeuvring areas for each location.

Can I practise for an exam centre that isn't listed on OefenRoutes?

We're continuously expanding our coverage, but we don't yet cover every exam centre in Belgium. If yours isn't listed yet, keep an eye on our site or blog for updates.

Does the exam differ between exam centres?

The content and assessment of the practical test are the same throughout Belgium. What differs is the surroundings: each exam centre has its own type of roads, junctions and traffic situations, which is exactly what our practice routes prepare you for.

Are there multiple practice routes per exam centre?

Yes, most exam centres have several practice routes, each built around a different part of the area. This gives you a broader picture of the traffic situations you could encounter during your test.

Can I change exam centre after registering?

That's handled through the organisation where you booked your practical test. We don't offer bookings ourselves — we only show the practice routes and manoeuvring areas per exam centre.

Practice routes

What exactly is a practice route?

A practice route is a sample route near an exam centre, built around the traffic situations (junctions, roundabouts, school zones...) you're most likely to encounter there during a test.

Are the practice routes exactly the same as the exam routes?

No, the examiner chooses a route on the day of your exam. Our practice routes do give you a good idea of the type of roads, junctions and traffic situations around the exam centre.

How much time should I set aside to practise a route?

Allow for roughly the same duration as your practical test, plus some extra time to pause along the way at tricky junctions or traffic situations.

Can I practise the routes without a driving instructor?

Yes, as long as you're accompanied by an adult supervisor who meets the legal requirements, or together with your driving school.

What if a practice route no longer matches the actual situation?

Roadworks or diversions can mean the situation on the ground differs. So always stay alert to the current traffic signs and rules, even on a route you already know.

How many times should I drive a route before I'm ready?

This varies per candidate. Drive the route a few times at different times of day, so you experience both quiet and busy conditions.

The practical test

What exactly does the examiner assess during the practical test?

The examiner assesses things like your driving on public roads, how you handle traffic and road signs, and the special manoeuvres. The exact points breakdown varies by region.

How long does the practical test usually take?

A practical test typically takes around 30 to 45 minutes, including the special manoeuvres. The exact duration can vary by exam centre.

What do I need to bring to my exam?

At a minimum, bring your ID card, your provisional licence and your exam registration confirmation. Also always check the specific requirements of your exam centre.

What happens if I fail my exam?

You can schedule a new exam. Use the time in between to practise more on the practice routes and manoeuvring areas around your exam centre, and discuss with your driving school where you can improve.

Can I bring a supervisor along during the exam?

This depends on the exam centre and the type of exam. Check with the organisation where you booked your exam.
